Mateo Kovačić (Croatian Mateo Kovačić; May 6, 1994, Linz, Austria) is a Croatian footballer, midfielder of the English club Chelsea. Croatian national team player. Participant of the 2014 World Championship and 2016 European Championship. Silver medalist of the 2018 World Championship in Russia.
In the summer of 2015, Mateo moved to Real Madrid. The transfer amount was 35 million euros. On 23 August, against Sporting Gijón, he made his La Liga debut, replacing Isco in the second half. On December 8, in the Champions League match against Swedish Malmö, Kovacic scored his debut goal for the royal club. In 2017, he won the Spanish championship for the first time as part of the Royal Club, and also won the Champions League for the second time in a row. After the 2018 World Cup, Kovacic announced his desire to leave the club due to irregular playing practice.
On 8 August 2018, Kovacic was loaned out to English club Chelsea until the end of the 2018/2019 season. On 18 August, in a match against London's Arsenal, he made his debut in the English Premier League. On July 1, 2019, Kovacic signed a five-year contract with the club. On 27 November 2019, he scored his first goal for Chelsea in the 2-2 away game against Valencia in the UEFA Champions League group stage.
